CTE - Reflective Teaching

This guide provides resources and best practices for fauclty engaged in reflective teaching. These include resources on creating a teaching portfolio and teaching philosophy.

 

The College’s policy outlining the requirements for chairs and directors conducting classroom observations can be found in the Faculty Handbook located on the College’s website.

Observation Forms

When conducting a formal observation, the observer must use the following approved forms for conducting formal observations:

After completing an observation, the observer must:

  1. meet face-to-face (person, phone, or video conference) with the faculty member to discuss the observation.
  2. allow the faculty member to respond to the observation verbally or in writing.
  3. give the observed faculty member a copy of the observation for their records. 
  4. encourage the faculty member to place the document into their teaching portfolio.
  5. have the faculty member sign the observation acknowledging the review.
  6. allow the faculty member adequate time to respond (one week) to the review.
  7. keep a copy of the signed observation and written response (if applicable) for their records.
  8. send a hard copy of
    1. the signed observation
    2. written response (if applicable)

to the Office of Academic Affairs for the faculty member’s official file.

Please note that peer observations should be retained by the peer observer and observed faculty member only.  The peer observer or faculty member may choose to include them in their teaching portfolio for purposes of rank and promotion consideration.  Unless desired, the peer observations do not need to be recorded with the chair or director or Office of Academic Affairs.
