APA Style & Citation 7th edition

How to format your paper and cite your sources using 7th ed. APA style.

Citation Rules: References

This can include videos (e.g. YouTube and TED talks), movies, television shows, images, or other artwork.

  • For films and TV shows: if you are citing the entire work--use the director for a film, and the executive producer for a TV series. To refer to a specific part of a whole (such as an episode of a TV series), cite the writer and director of that episode and provide information for the whole (the series title).
  • For YouTube videos, use the name of the account or channel that uploaded the video as the author/creator.
  • Clip Art or stock images found within the program you are using (Word or PowerPoint) do not need to be cited. Images found on the web do need in-text citations and a corresponding reference.
  • For more information on using figures, charts, and tables see Chapter 7 in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association or the Tables and Figures section of APAstyle.apa.org.
  • For more examples of references for various types of media, see Sections 10.12–10.14 of the Publication Manual or the Audiovisual Media section of APAstyle.apa.org.
